Indigenous front submits memo to PM

KATHMANDU: Indigenous People Mega Front (IPMF) today submitted their memorandum to Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal urging the later to incorporate rights of Janajati and indigenous nationalities in the new constitution.

Shankar Limbu, a member of the Front's public relation committee, said that the memorandum is to draw the PM's attention towards the plight of the indigenous people, who he claimed were living in 'oppression and discrimination'.

Limbu further allege that they have been excluded from political representation, decision-making, educational and economic opportunities.

After handing over the memo, Limbu said the Prime Minister showed positive consideration to resolve their problems.

“PM said he would soon direct the local bodies to look into the matter,” Limbu shared.

One of their demands includes what they call constitutional safeguard to their 'self-determination' and 'autonomy” in the new constitution.

The Front is also organising protest programme to press the government to ensure the rights of Janajati and indigenous people in the new constitution.
