Indigenous people prepare for D-Day

KATHMANDU: Indigenous nationalities said that they were all set to observe the 15th World Indigenous Day by organising various programmes across the country on August 9.

Speaking at a function organised here today to announce the programme, Nagendra Rai, president, All Nepal Federation for Indigenous Nationalities (Unified) stressed on the need of protection of millions of indigenous nationalities and their rights. “We’ve decided to mark the day as a festival and an opportunity to cobble together to renew the struggle for pressurising the government to recognise our contribution in different phases of democratic movement in the country,” Rai said.

Taking potshots at political parties for doing precious little to fulfill their demands, he reiterated for proportional rights of the people belonging to the indigenous nationalities in all state organs. The federation is scheduled to organise a series of preparatory programmes ahead of the D-day.
