Intl conference on knowledge management gets underway
KATHMANDU: A three-day-long international conference with the theme 'knowledge management for sustainable development' got inaugurated here today.
Inaugurating the conference, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav said that the knowledge management had become a key challenge to many organisations in today's globalised knowledge-based economy.
Highlighting a persistence knowledge gap in various organisations, President Yadav said, "Knowledge management is key to sustainable development and is critical in identifying knowledge gaps."
He further hoped that the conference would be highly relevant in addressing many pertinent issues of developing countries.
Kiran Dangol, general secretary, AITAA Nepal Chapter said that the main objective of the conference was to create a forum for sharing experiences among various partners in finding solutions to problems of knowledge management.
Speaking on the same occasion, Prof Said Irandoust, president, AIT said that the "New Nepal" as envisaged by the people of Nepal would only materialise with 'quality education' and competent 'human resources'.
He hoped that the conference would help strengthen the knowledge management in Nepal.
Citing an example of the former Soviet Union, he said that the country would be a failure if it had failed to integrate its knowledge in economic appropriately in different sectors.
He also expected that the conference would help AIT's collaborative research with the Nepalese universities and would go a long way in benefitting both the countries in the region.
Engineer Ramesh Kumar Bista, president of AITAA Nepal Chapter, said that the AIT had already produced more than 16,000 graduates, including PhDs and at least 1,000 of them were Nepalese.
Over 100 Nepali students are currently pursuing their education at AIT, Bangkok, in a range of subjects and programme.
The first international conference of its kind to be jointly organised by AIT and AITAA Nepal Chapter will see participants and experts from 15 countries.
He said that around 57 technical papers, on various sub-themes, ranging from infrastructure development and management to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) would be presented during the conference.
Also in the conference, experts will present their papers on sustainable energy, technology and policies, agriculture and rural development, environmental management and technology.
The conference is jointly organised by Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand and Asian Institute of Technology Alumni Association (AITAA) Nepal Chapter.
