Kathmandu, May 1:

The Mukta Kamaiya Samaj, with the objective of pressing the government to fulfil the commitments it had made earlier, organised a signature campaign today. The samaj, which is a society of freed Kamaiyas, urged the government to rehabilitate them, provide them with jobs, cultivable land and irrigation facilities, among others.

The samaj said that Kamaiyas could not lay claim over the government-given land because those chunks of land were already occupied by squatters. “We were thrashed when they tried to lay claim over the land,” the Kamaiyas said.

The samaj stated that it was compelled to take to the streets as the government did not pay heed to their repeated pleas.
