KMC planning to operate night bus service

Kathmandu, February 16

Kathmandu Metropolitan City in a bid to provide safe and smooth public transportation   service is preparing to operate night bus service in Kathmandu valley in collaboration with Sajha Yatayat. This is a third time the KMC has forwarded its plan to operate night bus service. KMC in August 2012 had signed an agreement with transport entrepreneurs for operating night bus service from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. It had provided Rs 4.5 million to the service providers then.

KMC and Sajha Yatayat in September 2015 again signed an agreement to procure 20 large buses at the cost of Rs 100 million and operate night bus service in Kathmandu. However, the plan did not materialise.

The KMC, however, has recently started holding discussion with Sajha Yatahat in a bid to resume the service ‘more effectively’ this time. Spokesperson for KMC Ishwor Man Dangol said, “This time, we are studying what went wrong when KMC operated the night bus service in the past. We will properly implement the plan this time.”

Dangol said KMC would most likely support eateries near night bus stands, which will encourage people to travel at night. Both KMC and Sajha Yatayat will share the revenue generated from the joint venture.
