KP Sharma Oli rules out monarchy revival
KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli on Monday commented that monarchy could not be revived in the nation though people around the former King Gyanendra Shah had been expediting their political activities in the name of religion of late.
Receiving a Deusi-Bhailo team at his residence in Balkot of Bhaktapur this afternoon, the former Prime Minister said no any force could reestablish the monarchy as it was abolished by the People's Movement.
Recalling an event which the former monarch had addressed a couple of weeks ago, Oli said the religious organisations and their leaders should not attempt to engage themselves in politics.
He was angry with the organisers that Shah was addressed as the His Majesty King there.
"We threw away the monarchy eight years ago," he said, "(But) they call him His Majesty King as if there is any King."
"They are outdated. Do they want to revive the monarchy?" he said, hinting at engagements of Indian religious leaders at the function, "People threw it. But, can some sages from India keep monarchy here?"
'No discussion on Constitution amendment'
Meanwhile, Oli reiterated that the government had not discussed the purported Constitution amendment proposal with the main opposition party.
Commenting on the reported discussion between the ruling coalition and the agitating Madhesi parties over the issue of late, he said the UML's stance that the charter could only be amended to meet national interests was intact.
