Leopard beaten to death

Kathmandu, August 2

Locals of Chandragiri-10 near Matatirtha temple beat a leopard to death yesterday evening at around 7:00 pm.

According to Sector Forest Office of Mahadevsthan, the locals said they killed the leopard after it attacked them and injured eight locals.

“Though they were aware of the movement of leopard in their village for the last 2-3 days, locals informed us only after they killed it,” sector forest officer Arun Gupta told The Himalayan Times.

The deceased leopard was fully mature and 5.5 feet long. Gupta said leopard had received several injuries to its head. It was buried in the central zoo after post-mortem today.

Meanwhile, Dr Indra Sapkota, chief at Kathmandu Forest Office, regretted the killing of the leopard.

“Killing a leopard is not a solution to human-wildlife conflict.

If this continues there would no leopard left in the country in the next few years,” he said, adding that the authorities must investigate whether the concerned officials were negligent about the movement of leopard in human settlements.”

Police said the locals killed the leopard in revenge for its attack on humans.
