Mahantha Thakur warns of resuming blockade

KATHMANDU: Tarai Madhes Democratic Party Chairman Mahantha Thakur warned that the protesting Madhesi parties would resort to border blockade once again if the government continued ignoring their concerns in major political decisions.

Speaking with journalists in the Capital today, Thakur said the protesters would resume the blockade if the government continued bypassing them.

"The Constitution was promulgated ignoring us, so was amendment endorsed," chief of one of the constituents of the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front said, "The government formed the political mechanism to review boundaries unilaterally, in the same fashion."

"If it continues, the United Democratic Madhesi Front will hold a meeting soon and announces sterner protest programmes."

The government on Thursday had formed a political mechanism headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal Chairman Kamal Thapa. The UDMF, however, had announced that it would not accept the panel as it was formed without the protesting parties' consent.

He, however, maintained, "If the mechanism is given a constitutional recognition and our concerns are included in the terms of reference, we do not have any objection to get involved in the mechanism."

The UDMF on February 8 had decided to end the sit-in ongoing at the Birgunj-Raxaul Nepal-India border point, three days after the local traders had chased away the protesters from the sit-in site eventually ending the four-and-half-months-long obstruction.

Thakur, however, defended the decision claiming the form of protests was changed owing to the the change in season.

Meanwhile, the Madhesi leader said he did not have any concern over Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's visit to India.
