Maoists to restructure judiciary: Devkota

Kathmandu, April 14:

The CPN-Maoist has a plan to restructure the judiciary, changing the current structure of the court system, along with the formation of a new government.

“We will bring changes in the judiciary, which is urgently needed,” Maoist leader Khim Lal Devkota, who is also a member of the interim parliament, told this daily today. “We will focus on the reform process immediately after the formation of a new government,” Devkota, who is also an advocate, said.

Devkota said the government will start the reform process as per the commitment expressed by the party in its election manifesto.

The Maoists are likely to lead the next government. Stating that the Maoists will go for a three-tier judiciary — Supreme Court, High Courts and District Courts — the Maoist manifesto envisions commitment to bring drastic changes in the judiciary to deliver justice equally to the common people.

As per the Maoist vision, the SC would take up serious legal issues, including constitutional issues, issues related to natural resources between the states and other issues, and the high courts would have extraordinary jurisdictions to deliver justice in an effective manner.

“The current set up of the judiciary, which has not been able to deliver justice, cannot continue in the future and thus an immediate reform is obvious,” advocate Mukti Pradhan said.
