Martyrs' Day being observed

KATHMANDU: Martyrs' Day is being observed across the country by paying tributes to those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of people and country, on Saturday.

Today, various programmes have been organised across the country to remember four most important martyrs of Nepal.

Shukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand and Gangalal Shrestha are the four martyrs who gave up their lives to free the country from the tyranny of Rana autocracy and start democratic tradition.

Shukraraj was hanged from a tree near Pachali of Teku on Magh 10, 1997 BS, while  Dharma Bhakta was hanged in Sifal on Magh 13 and Dashrath Chand and Gangalal were shot  at Shobha Bhagawati on Magh 15 by the then autocratic Rana rulers.

Every year, Magh 16 in the Nepali calendar is marked as the National Martyr's Day.
