Media not doing enough for women: FNJ

Kathmandu, February 27:

Federation of Nepali Journalists vice-president Shiva Gaunle said move to ensure 33 per cent participation of women in all the sectors has remained only on papers due to lack of seriousness among the stakeholders.

Speaking at a programme — Women’s Participation and Media’s Role in Peace Process — he said there should be at least 50 per cent participation of women in media as they compromise half of the total population.

Kanti Rijal, programme coordinator of Academy of Education Department, said the news coverage of women should be on par with the ratio of female listeners — 61 per cent. She said women journalists are left behind due to lack of understanding among their co-workers and ignorance of the media.

FJN general secretary Mahendra Bista said women are still struggling to find space in media. Bhawani Baral, a representative from Dharan, urged the government and the agitating parties to implement the Comprehensive Peace Accord.

Baijanti Karki of Aama Milan Kendra said the media should focus more on peace process as they did during the Jana Andolan II.

FNJ president Bishnu Nisthuri said the ongoing turmoil in Madhes has been affecting Nepali media, accusing the government of being biased against media.

The programme was jointly organised by Sancharika Samuha and Academy of Education Development.
