Media should be restructured, says FNJ prez Jha
Kathmandu, May 8:
Newly elected president of Federation of Nepali Journalists Dharmendra Jha today said Nepali media should be restructured to include the aspirations of all marginalised groups.
The task of restructuring of the media should be initiated from the government media, so that private media would follow suit, he said, addressing a programme organised by Jagaran Media Centre to felicitate the newly elected executive members of the FNJ.
He said the new constitution should mention the press freedom as the unalienable rights, further expressing commitment to implement the Working Journalists’ Act.
Chairman of Press Council Nepal Rajendra Dahal accused the national channels of being centralised and said the FNJ should raise voice against such practice. Though media should give voice to the voiceless, some media were unable to incorporate the voice of the marginalised groups, so the restructuring of the media was essential, he added.
President of Sancharika Samuha Nepal Babita Basnet said the marginalised groups, including the Dalits and the women, should be included while restructuring the media.
Restructuring media should begin from the grassroots level, she said, adding that the new government should be inclusive.
