Media training workshop on disaster reporting concludes

KATHMANDU: A two-day workshop organised with an objective of enhancing the understanding of media personnel on the key issues of Disaster Risk Management concluded here on Friday.

A total of 25 media personnel participated in the Media Training Workshop on Disaster Reporting, which was organised by the National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET)-Nepal with the support of United States Agency for International Development/Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA).

NSET Executive Director Dr Amod Mani Dixit said that the media sector could provide constructive support to the affected people, the government as well as other communities in every step of the preparedness, rescue and reconstruction as the country is still at high-risk, in view of earthquake.

Similarly, senior media person Prof Ram Krishna Regmi opined that the media sector should give high priority to the issue of natural disaster as the country faces every type of natural disaster throughout the year.

Media expert Shreeram Singh Basnet said that it was necessary that media persons should have detailed information about natural disaster as the role of the newsroom and reporters gets much more crucial during the hour of disaster.

Likewise, General Manager of the Nepal Television, Laxman Humagain, said that media houses and media persons have learned a lot from the Gorkha Earthquake adding that the media houses and media persons should be capable to ensure people's right to information during any type of natural disaster in the days ahead.

Ramesh Guragain, Bijay Krishna Upadhyay and Khadga Sen Oli of the NSET said that capacity building of media personnel was necessary as media is the main medium to provide information and alert the general people about natural disasters including earthquake.
