Meet backs biomass energy as a substitute for firewood

Kathmandu, January 20:

Dr Hari Krishna Upadhyaya, a member of the National Planning Commsission (NPC), gave firm assurances of the NPC’s intention to give increased focus to biomass energy in the next five-year plan.

Upadhyaya was speaking at a seminar on ‘Biomass energy/Application for Profit: Potential and Prospects in Nepal’ held on Wednesday. Mahendra Man Singh, director of TMB-Energietechnik, laid stress on the need to generate electricity from biomass. The seminar was organised under the aegis of the TMB-Energietechnik, Centre for Energy Studies Institute of Engineering, TU, and the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (APEC).

Participants in the seminar focused on the positive impacts of biomass power plants, possibilities of replacement of kerosene and focused on briquette as a substitute for firewood.
