Ministries told not to distribute cash relief

Kathmandu, January 31

The Election Commission today directed the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Home Affairs not to provide cash relief to anyone.

A meeting of EC commissioners presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav took a decision to this effect.

According to EC Spokesperson Navaraj Dhakal, the meeting also decided to ask Chief Secretary Lok Darshan Regmi to furnish details of financial assistance provided by the MoF and the MoHA, as they had not provided the details to the poll panel despite its repeated request.

The EC said that it had written to those ministries several times, urging them to provide details of cash relief they had distributed. The election body had enforced the election code on January 26 for the National Assembly election slated for February 7.

The EC said the government couldn’t appoint, promote, transfer or depute any of its employees, including security personnel, except for the purpose of election. Likewise, the election code of conduct also prohibits the government from providing awards and increasing the perks and benefits to its employees.
