Kathmandu, August 19:

The organisers of Miss Nepal 2008 today postponed the beauty pageant rescheduled for August 23 and proposed the protesting groups to resolve the dispute through dialogue.

They were forced to postpone the pageant following protests from women wings of the Maoists and the CPN-UML as well as 39 other organisations.

Gopal Sundar Lal Kakshyapati, chairman of the Hidden Treasure, one of the organisers of the

event, today hoped the dispute would be solved within a week.

However, Amrita Thapa, general secretary of the All Nepal Women Association-Revolutionary (ANWA-R) -- the women wing of the Maoists, said the organisers needed to clarify how the nation and the women would suffer if the pageant was not held. “They need to prove how many rights of women will be violated if the pageant was not organised,” she added.

The ANWA-R has already collected signatures of 310 CA members against the pageant. Thapa said they were meeting NC vice president Ram Chandra Poudel to seek support from the NC and chief of army staff Rookmangud Katawal, requesting him not to provide the Nepal Army’s auditorium for the pageant.

Two rounds of talks between the organisers and the protesters have failed.
