Kathmandu, October 20:

A one-month mobile workshop and scientific exploration on Himalayan environment change is being organised from October 16 to November 14 in the Himalayan countries, jointly organised by the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

In this regard, a delegation from CAS is visiting Nepal, comprising of scientists and journalists. They will participate in one-day seminar on underrating Himalayan Environment Change on October 26 in Kathmandu.

“The researchers will basically explore the social and environmental changes in China and Nepal, to promote mutual understanding and knowledge sharing through multidisciplinary research and study tour in the field,” states an ICIMOD document.

The workshop will concentrate on mountain ecosystem, environmental changes and cultural and economic dynamics. On mountain issues, they will discuss on glacier, snow, water and hydrological process, vegetation and biological diversity, mountain and risk hazards.

On environmental changes, they will discuss on use of land, changes in land coverage as well as climate changes and its potential impacts. While on cultural and economic area, they will study from mountain passes to economic corridors and again on cultural landscapes and cultural diversity.

The organisers believe that an active regional network of scientists and research institutions in the Himalayan region will be developed in the near future. It is also expected that a comparative framework for a better understanding of Himalayan environment changes will also be developed.
