Muslims on warpath

Kathmandu, January 5:

Calling for the announcement of the date for the conduct of constituent assembly elections and proportional representation of the Muslim community in the state mechanism, the Nepal Muslim Ettehad Organisation, an umbrella organisation of the Muslim community in Nepal, enforced an hour-long chakka jam at the Ratna Park today.

Agitators sat down in the middle of the road at Ratna Park at 1:15 pm and brought traffic to a grinding halt for an hour.

“The interim constitution should show respect for the sacrifice we made during the Jana Andolan II. As the statute makes no mention of the sacrifice we made during the movement, how can we say the interim statute is inclusive?” Taj Mohammad Miya, the joint coordinator of the organisation, said.

Miya said they will launch fresh protests if the state continues to sideline the Muslims.
