Pelosi praises Nepal’s constitution

Kathmandu, May 7

Minister for Foreign Affairs Prakash Sharan Mahat in a meeting with Nancy Pelosi today informed her about the country’s present politics, local level elections, peace process and promulgation of the new constitution.

In a meeting that took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mahat shed light on the constitutional provisions guaranteeing inclusion, human rights and democracy. He also informed the US leader about constitutional provisions that guaranteed representation of women and ethnic groups in all state organs.

Minister Mahat also thanked the US for its support extended to Nepal in the aftermath of the 2015 earthquakes.

On the occasion, Pelosi praised the provisions of Nepal’s constitution regarding women’s participation and inclusion and said the US could take a page out of these provisions.

She also assured of continued US support to Nepal.  She also wished for the success of local level elections.

Also present in the meeting were Foreign Secretary Shanker Das Bairagi, members of both parties in the US House of Representatives as well as high-ranking officials, the US ambassador to Nepal, , among other officials.
