NSU steps up preparations for national general convention

Kathmandu, August 4

Nepali Congress-aligned Nepal Student union has stepped up preparations for its three-day 11th national general convention scheduled to begin at Bhrikutimandap from August 7.

The convention will be inaugurated by NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Around 3,400 representatives will attend the convention and around 30 per cent of the representatives from outside the Valley have already arrived in the capital to participate in the event.

UP Lamichhane, spokesperson, NSU, said the student union had asked its representatives to provide three passport size photos along with a document that revealed their identity.

The convention is estimated to cost Rs 17.88 million.

“The NC has strictly directed NSU cadres not to seek financial support from outside,” he added. The party has also prohibited wall painting and production of materials that may promote unhealthy competition.

This is the first general convention of the NSU after unification between the establishment faction of the NC and the faction led by Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The NC has formed a five-member panel headed by central committee member Prakash Sharan Mahat to conduct the convention. Some NSU cadres are still staging relay hunger strikes demanding ‘lawful’ convention.

NSU cadres have also started announcing candidacy for various posts.

Nain Singh Mahar, Jit Jung Basnet, Saroj Thapa close to NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba; Manoj Mani Acharya, Kshitiz Bhandari, Nil Kantha Risal and Deepak Bhattarai from the Ramchandra Paudel-led panel; Kundan Raj Kafle from Krishna Sitaula-led panel; and Shuvaram Basnet from Khum Bahadur Khadka-led panel have announced their candidacy for the post of NSU president.
