Nepal, US schools collaborate for drone project

KATHMANDU: Kanjirowa National Higher Secondary School in Kathmandu in collaboration with the American Bullis School organised an interactive programme on use of drones and robotics technology at the school premises in Balkumari on Friday.

A statement by the Kanjirowa School stated that team leader of the Kanjirowa-Bullis STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Club’s Project Drone, Michael C. Kronmiller, who is a student from the Bullis School, presented information on uses of drones in extreme environmental as well as manmade conditions.

In those conditions, the drone can be used to locate victims, reduce human casualties, survey the disaster areas and vulnerable spots, and help in disaster preparedness, the statement said.

It also added that the collaboration would hold a Drone Test Fly in Kala Patthar of Solukhumbhu like last year.

Some humanities and social science projects would also be launched in the future.

The sensor-equipped, unmanned aircraft was previously used to locate the avalanche victims and to assist in wildlife conservation projects in Nepal.

Hence, the presentation benefitted disaster response and avoidance, enhancement of inspection capabilities in critical transportation and infrastructural developments, the statement claimed.

“The project will encourage aspiring scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians to involve in the field and strengthen the country’s economy and security,” Kronmiller was quoted in the statement.

The project is an international collaborative robotics project, which innovates small unmanned aircraft systems/sensors for the humanitarian purposes.
