New plan for garbage disposal
KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is all set to implement new technology for disposing garbage through pipelines.
According to Devendra Dongol, planner at the Physical Development and Construction Department, the final draft for the plan is almost ready since its preparation from February.
The study had been carried out in coordination with and funding from the Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA).
About 350 tons of garbage is being produced in the capital every day. “We have failed to recycle the garbage since 80 percent could be utilised” said Dongol. Dongol further said that the garbage will be divided into degradable and non-degradable wastes with degradable being used to produce fertilisers.
According to the KMC the Ministry of Local Development has prepared an amendment bill on waste management to involve the private sector in the sustainable disposal of garbage in a scientific manner with a money making concept.
