NHRC to award Tamang, Shashi

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) decided to present this year's Dayaram Pariyar Human Rights Memorial Award to rights activist Charimaya Tamang and journalist Shyam Sundar Shashi.

This was announced amidst a programme organised by the Commission commemorating Pariyar's 10th memorial day. The award will be presented on coming May 26, the establishment day of the constitutional human rights body, according to NHRC Spokesperson Mohna Ansari.

'Dayaram Souvenior' published in commemoration of the 10th memorial day of Pariyar was launched by Commission Chairman Anup Raj Sharma on the occasion.

Speaking at the function, Sharma said, "The Commission is always determined to fight against impunity."

It has been five years that the Commission established the annual award in honour of its staffer, human rights defender Pariyar.

Human rights defender Pariyar was killed in a police firing in Janakpur during the 2006 People's Movement in the country.

The constitutional body has already recommended the government for action against the then Police Inspector Prakash Raj Sharma and his team guilty in the killing of Pariyar.
