NHRC forms teams to observe polls

Kathmandu, December 6

National Human Rights Commission has formed high-level election monitoring teams with a view to making election monitoring more effective and reliable.

NHRC Chairman Anup Raj Sharma heads one of the teams that include human rights activists, women rights activists, civil society members and legal professionals.

The teams will observe Kathmandu Valley-based polling stations and others outside the valley as per necessity, according to a statement issued by NHRC today.

The second phase of elections is being held in 45 districts for 128 parliamentary and 256 provincial seats tomorrow.

Meanwhile, NHRC today held meetings with Home Secretary Mohan Krishna Sapkota and chiefs of security agencies on election security and efforts made to protect and promote human rights.

During the meetings, NHRC Chairman Sharma urged the chiefs of security agencies to work towards ensuring that elections are held in a peaceful and fair manner.

Sharma said the election process would be reliable and successful only if the voters were confident about election security.

On the occasion, Home Secretary Sapkota said security arrangements for the elections were made in such a way as to protect human rights of all citizens, the statement added.
