NTC man jailed for graft

KATHMANDU: The Lalitpur District Court (LDC) today sent a fine defaulter to jail. The court was implementing a verdict of the Special Court in a corruption case.

Sadhu Ram Thapa, former storekeeper of Nepal Telecom was sent to Nakkhu Jail in Lalitpur after he refused to pay the fine imposed on him by the Special Court. The Special Court had slapped a four-year jail sentence on him and imposed a fine of Rs 3.6 million after convicting him on charges of misusing SIM cards, RUIM cards and recharge vouchers of NTC worth millions of rupees.

LDC spokesperson Beda Prasad Timalsina said a team of LDC employees and the police had arrested Thapa and had asked him later whether he is ready to pay the fine. Thapa said he could not pay the amount, according to Timalsina.

Responding to a case filed by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority, a three-member bench of Judges Gauri Bahadur Karki, Bhola Prasad Kharel and Om Prakash Mishra had issued the verdict nine months ago.
