NWSC staffers resume strike

Kathmandu, July 17:

Employees of the Nepal Water Supply Corporation have resumed strike after their new management board decided to lay-off 300 staffers .

“We have decided to come up with a strike programme to protest the government’s decision to lay-off the

members,” said Raj Kumar Thapa, secretary of the Joint Struggle Committee.

He blamed the NWSC management for refusing to hear the ultimatum issued by the committee earlier.

A press release issued by two employees’ associations- NWSC Employee Organisation and NWSC Employee Association- - said that they had demanded reappointment of the laid-off staffers and implementation of the earlier agreement reached with the struggling committee.

Laxmi Devkota, chairman of the NWSC Management Board, however, said that the laying-off process aims to benefit the staffers and bring them into the network of permanent staff as they were working on contract for over six years. “I’m disappointed that some union workers misunderstood the new plan though they themselves had agreed to it ,” he said.
