OHCHR’s plea

KATHMANDU: United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal on Monday appealed to the government to ensure the rights of indigenous people as per the International Labour Organisation Indigenous and Tribal People Convention. James Anaya, special rapporteur for the situation of human rights and fundamental freedom of indigenous people in Nepal, said that much had to be done to ensure the rights of the indigenous people in reality as assured by the government in different agreements reached with different indigenous groups. Issuing a press statement in the capital, the UNOHCHR informed that it was reviewing the human rights situation of the indigenous people by analysing the ongoing process of the drafting of the nes constitution. It will also assess the implementation of the past agreements of the government stating to secure the rights of the indigenous people as per the ILO convention.
