One injured in Bijeshwari police firing, another detained

KATHMANDU: A man allegedly involved in an extortion case was shot and injured as he tried to elude the security personnel deployed from Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku to detain him for questioning, in Bijeshwari area of Kathmandu Metropolitan City today. Police have also arrested another one associated with him.

The injured has been identified as Baburam Tamang, aka 'Lopsang Lama (Milan)' and his aide who has been arrested as Amrit Tamang, both residents of Likhu Rural Municipality in Ramechhap district.

Acting on the complaint that Tamang duo were involved in threatening one of the ward members of Likhu Rural Municipality and demanding a sum of Rs 20 million, a team of security personnel deployed from the MPCD reached Bijeshwari to detain the duo when they tried to elude police by jumping off a wall, at around 12:10 pm today, according to Spokesperson for Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD), Superintendent of Police (SP) Kedar Dhakal. He said police had to take a shot at Baburam's foot to take him under control.

Injured in the police firing, Baburam is receiving treatment at Bir Hospital under police custody, Central Police Newsroom informed.

Meanwhile, investigation into the case is underway, SP Dhakal told THT Online.
