One killed as Bisket Jatra lingo breaks down

BHAKTAPUR: A person died while five others sustained injuries when the lingo (wooden pole) erected to celebrate the annual Bisket Jatra festival broke down, in Bhaktapur on Thursday.

The unidentified victim was in his mid-30s, according to DSP Krishna Prasain of the Metropolitan Police Range, Bhaktapur.

He was rushed to the Bhaktapur Hospital immediately after the incident but was declared dead on arrival.

The injured have been identified as Suman Taja, Ram Krishna Duwal, Bal Krishna Lila, Krishna Bhakta Duwal and Surendra Kaiti.

Meanwhile, the locals erected the second lingo at around 10 pm yesterday after the accident in the evening.

Such accidents are considered bad omens in Bhaktapur.

However, the Guthi Sansthan traditionally brings an additional pole as well from the forest of Sallaghari, in Chittapol of Bhaktapur considering the likelihood of such untoward incidents.

The Bisket Jatra festival marks the beginning of the New Year as per the Bikram Sambat calendar.
