Paudel, Sitaula file candidacies for Nepali Congress president

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress Acting President Ram Chandra Paudel and General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula on Friday registered their candidacies for the post of party president.

Likewise,  Shasanka Koirala from Paudel's panel and Gagan Kumar Thapa from Sitaula's panel filed the nominations for the general secretary.

Paudel had announced his candidacy for the party presidential election in a press conference at the party central office on Wednesday.

While announcing his candidacy on Wednesday, Paudel had failed to name the treasurer's candidate. He, however, finalised the name of Sita Devi Yadav this morning only.

Yadav also filed the nomination today.

Party leader Sujata Koirala on Thursday withdrew her candidacy for the party's president and announced that she will lend her support to Paudel in the elections for the top position.

Among three contenders of Nepali Congress presidency race, party's senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba had announced his candidacy with Arjun Narsingh KC as the general secretary and Chitra Lekha Yadav as the treasurer yesterday.

Deuba became first to file his candidacy for the election on Thursday.

The candidates wishing to fight for the party's Central Working Committee's elected posts will have to file their candidacy by noon today.

Nepali Congress' 13th National General Convention began yesterday with fanfare amid a grand function at the Khula Manch in the presence of thousands of Congress supporters, leaders of political parties, including those from neighbouring countries. And the party’s close session will begin at 2:00pm at Bhrikutimandap.

Election for the CWC posts are slated for March 6.
