People affected by road expansion demonstrate at Maitighar

KATHMANDU: The families who lost their houses in course of theĀ road expansion in the Capital held a street protest today at the Maitighar Mandala demanding proper compensation and land in exchange.

Those affected from different parts of the Kathmandu Valley including Kalimati, Kalanki, Tripureshwor, Bhaktapur, Godawari, Dhapakhel and Dakshinkali had gathered there to pressurise the government for proper compensation.

They have also formed a struggle committee for the same.

The affected families have accused the government of encroaching their ancient settlement and using force to drive them out of there.

They also complained that their houses were being demolished 'unlawfully' in the name of road expansion without prior information.

"Though the government was asked to provide appropriate compensation before bulldozing their houses, the drive has continued in 22 locations leaving the affected high and dry," Suman Sayami, a victim stated.
