Petition demands polls

KATHMANDU: A writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court on Tuesday demanding conduct of local elections.

Six lawyers, including Chandrakanta Gyanwali, have argued in their petition that it would take 8-10 years to hold the local polls if current provisions were to be followed.

The petition says the National Reconstruction Authority would not be able to work efficiently if local elections are not held at the earliest.

The petitioners have named the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Election Commission, main opposition Nepali Congress, Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development and the Secretariat of Legislature Parliament as defendants.
