PM pledges better security in 3 months
Kathmandu, January 18:
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ today assured the National Human Rights Commission officials of improvement in security situation and promotion of rule of law in the country within three months.
The PM expressed the commitment during a meeting with chairman Kedar Nath Upadhyaya and commissioners of the constitutional body, which ventured to draw the chief executive’s attention to the recent cases of human rights violation.
“The Prime Minister promised us to bring a human rights plan of action within three months to improve security situation,” NHRC commissioner Gauri Pradhan told this daily. Pradhan, who is also the spokesperson for NHRC, said the PM, however, defended the government’s decision to withdraw criminal cases. The PM stated that most of the said criminal cases were politically-motivated cases and only a few real criminal cases could have been withdrawn by chance.
The PM said the plan of action would make security agencies stronger. However, the officials said they had taken the PM’s words cautiously, considering the government’s failure to translate its past
commitments into action. NHRC also expressed its doubt over providing transitional justice.
The rights officials also apprised the premier of the rising cases of impunity and violation of human rights, asking the government to seek the Commission’s suggestions while signing international conventions or adopting any human rights policy.
The PM is said to have assured the officials of respecting the status of NHRC and following the constitution.
