PM to attend UNGA meet

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal is scheduled to leave for the United States on September 21, to participate in the sixty-fourth General Assembly of the United Nations slated to begin 15 September, in New York.

PM Nepal is also meeting President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and other heads of the state on the sidelines of the assembly.

PM Nepal will address the UN general assembly on September 23 and apprise the international community of the progress being made in Nepal on the peace process and constitution writing. He will be accompanied by foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, lawmakers and other high-ranking government officials.

Nepal will also address a conference on climate change on the sidelines of the general assembly, sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said today. “We’re giving finishing touches to the agendas Nepal will raise on the floor of the general assembly,” said Rajan Bhattarai, foreign advisor to the PM.

Speculations are rife that the peace process is in peril in Nepal and the constitution drafting is moving at a snail’s pace. This is where the international community is keen on hearing, he added.

PM Nepal is also addressing global warming, climate change and its effects - food crisis - in Nepal as warned by various organisations and reports in recent days.

PM Nepal is also scheduled to take part in different programmes to be organised by the Nepali community in America during his stay.

Meanwhile, a government source said an estimated Rs 20 million has been earmarked for the delegation led by the PM to New York. “This is a costly trip,” he added.

The heads of the all countries that are the member of the United Nations will take part in assembly. In the assembly, world leaders will discuss more than 100 contemporary issues of the world.
