Police-DRI non-cooperation blamed for gold smuggling

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers at the meeting of Public Accounts Committee under the Legislature-Parliament today said that gold smuggling was taking place unchecked due to a lack of coordination between police and the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI).

The statement comes at a time when police have been under fire for their failure to curb gold smuggling across the country.

Saying that gold smugglers were left scot-free under power as soon as they were arrested, lawmaker Ram Hari Khatiwada said that the role of police and the Department in curbing the crime was questionable.

Likewise, lawmaker Rajendra Kumar KC said that gold smugglers should be booked irrespective of their political attachment.

Additional Inspector General of Police Pratap Singh Thapa said that police were committed to bring gold smugglers to book.
