Prachanda agreed to share data on combatants: Pascoe

KATHMANDU: UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B Lyan Pascoe today revealed that the Unified CPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' had agreed to share the data regarding the latest number of their combatants in the next meeting of the Joint Monitoring Coordination Committee (JMCC.

Talking to reporters at the Tribhuvan International Airport, before wrapping up his three-day Nepal visit, Pascoe said, "I talked about the latest number of Maoist combatants with Maoist chairman Prachanda and he said to me that they would inform their combatant numbers in the JMCC meeting."

Asked about the UNMIN'S refusal to share the information regarding the Maoist combatants, Pascoe said, such information would remain 'secret' as per the previous agreements. "It's wrong to say that UNMIN did not cooperate with the government,” he added.

At the end of the visit, Pascoe said that his visit was successful and he found that political leaders have strong hope and understanding to achieve the twin goals-Promulgation of new constitution and logical conclusion to the peace process.

However, he reasoned that unity, strong will power and compromises were necessary to get the constitution drafted on time.
