Press Chautari memo urges full freedom for media

KATHMANDU: Press Chautari Nepal (PCN) on Sunday submitted a memorandum to the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subas Nembang demanding a provision in the Preamble of the forthcoming constitution, ensuring full press freedom.

A PCN team led by its president Rajendra Aryal met the CA chairman at his office and handed over the memorandum to him. The Chautari also demanded that the new constitution should ensure freedom of expression and a free press in concrete terms while safeguarding the fundamental rights of the people.

Receiving the memorandum, CA chairman Nembang said priority would be accorded to the issue of press freedom in the new constitution. Stating that the constitution writing process had reached the final stage, he informed the team that the constitution drafting committee would produce the draft of the new constitution by this evening.

PCN president Aryal said his organisation would play a supportive as well as a watchdog’s role in the implementation of the constitution in the coming days as well. In the memo, the PCN wished that the ongoing process of constitution writing would move ahead more expeditiously.
