Rally held to raise awareness of voting rights
Kathmandu, December 2
The Kathmandu University School of Management organised ‘Walkathon: A Walk for the Voters’ today with the objective of raising awareness of voting rights .
The walkathon, which passed from Maitighar to Basantapur, saw participation of around 300 people, mostly students from different colleges of Kathmandu Valley. The participants carried banners and placards with slogans.
Nawaraj Dhakal, joint secretary at Election Commission, was the chief guest of the event, which was also graced by Malvika Subba, Miss Nepal 2002.
“People rarely recognise the importance of voting. Since youth make a huge part of the voting population, we wanted to coordinate with the youth to generate awareness among people,” said Nikhil Narsingh Shakya, a member of the organising committee.
Addressing the crowd at Basantapur, Dhakal said, “The constitution has provided everyone the right to vote and looking back at the huge participation of public in the past polls, we can say public support has been huge.”
The event was also aimed at attracting the public and authorities’ attention towards the need to make people aware of effective voter education. Records at the Election Commission show that the percentage of invalid votes in the local elections stood at 12.5 per cent.
