Reality bites: Discrimination over caste

Kathmandu, April 7:

In yet another incident of discrimination against the Dalits in the capital, a staff at the central office of Democratic National Youth Federation on Sunday evening beat up a Dalit woman with a pipe for touching water in Kapan.

Govinda Dhital (60) of Kapan VDC-1 beat Sunita BK with a pipe, alleging her of touching their drinking water source. Both the families have been using the same source for drinking water.

“The Dhital family used to scold us with derogatory words and misbehave with us for belonging to a lower caste,” Krishna Bishwokarma, Sunita’s husband said, adding that Dhital used to warn them instead of seeking apologies.

Following the incident, Dhital had called the police for the fear of Dalit youths who had gathered in the locality.

The Dalit youths today took Dhital to the Metropolitan Police Circle, Bouddha. He is in police custody. They have also filed a complaint against Dhital.

The police had reached the incident site this morning and tried to resolve the issue there, urging Dhital to apologise in public. But Dhital had outright refused to do so.

Later, Dhital apologised with the police and the locals for his act.
