RPP-N obstructs CA meet over 'changes in statute draft'

KATHMANDU: The fourth largest party in the Constituent Assembly, Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, obstructed meeting of the constitution writing body on Friday, arguing that the Constitution Drafting Committee Chairman presented a 'different' draft than what the Committee had finalised.

The CDC had tabled the first draft of statute to the CA full house on Tuesday. The CA had begun discussions over the draft on Thursday.

As soon as the meeting began today, RPP-N Chairman Kamal Thapa and party leader Sushil Shrestha asked for time to speak with the CA Chairman Subas Chandra Nembang.

The leader duo argued that the provision of local elections within six months of promulgation of the constitution was removed from the draft while a provision on right to religious conversion was added.

Following their remarks, lawmakers from the party started chanting slogans against continuation of the discussions.

Despite a number of requests by, CA Vice-Chair Onsari Gharti, the sloganeering has continued.

It is likely that the meeting will be postponed today.
