SC show cause to govt on Katawal

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a show cause notice to the government on a writ petition filed by advocate Damodar Poudel demanding the Apex Court intervention to scrap the cabinet's controversial decision of sacking Chief of Army Chief Rookmangud Katawal. A single bench of justice Bharat Raj Upreti asked the government to furnish explanation on Katawal's sacking within the next 15 days. In a writ petition, advocate Poudel on Wednesday also asked the SC to scrap the cabinet decision of appointing Katawal's deputy Kul Bahadur Khadka as the acting army chief.

Meanwhile the Minister for Law, Justice and Constituent Affairs Dev Gurung on Thursday said Supreme Court (SC) cannot rectify the unconstitutional move of the President.

Speaking with the journalists in Kaski, Gurung said that there are only two ways to cope with the present political turmoil, either the President has to rectify his move or the parliament has to act on the present situation through political consensus.
