Speaker expedites political parleys before no-confidence vote

KATHMANDU: Speaker Onsari Gharti on Wednesday held meetings with various political leaders as the Parliament is preparing to begin discussion on the no-confidence motion against the government on Thursday.

She called on President Bidya Devi Bhandari at the Sheetal Niwas and apprised the latter of the Parliament's recent activities.

An environment of mistrust has surfaced among the parties of late after the Nepali Congress and the CPN Maoist Centre registered a no-trust motion against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at the Parliament on July 13.

She also briefed the President about her recent attempts to bring all the political parties into consensus.

On the occasion, President Bhandari said that unity and consensus among the parties were essential to implement the Constitution.

Speaker Gharti meets NC Prez Deuba

Meanwhile, Speaker Gharti also met Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba at the latter's residence in Budhanilkantha this morning.

On the occasion, Gharti informed Deuba that the Parliament would be compelled to proceed with its working schedule if the parties did not forge consensus prior to the House meeting scheduled for 11 am on Thursday.

She had also met CPN Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli this morning and yesterday respectively.
