Special rights for Dalits in new constitution urged

KATHMANDU: Speakers at a programme organised today in the capital underlined the need to incorporate rights of the Dalits in the new constitution and appealed to all to express solidarity in their fight against caste-based discrimination and 'untouchability'.

Parshuram Ramtel, Constituent Assembly member representing Dalit community, urged for special rights to Dalits so as to empower them in the society.

He, however, said separate federal state for Dalits was not required as they had settled in every nook and corner of the country.

Another CA member Ratna Lal Pariyar urged the government to scrap some controversial clauses in the bills tabled in the House.

Nilambar Acharya, Constitutional Committee Chairman argued that since the historical CA had space for all the marginalised communities and Dalits, it would address all the issues in the new constitution.

"I disagree with the frequent allegations that CA has sidelined the woes of Dalits," he added.
