Student unions announce more protests

Kathmandu, May 16:

The seven student unions today announced further protest programmes for the restoration of ‘total democracy’ in the country.

A meeting of the agitating student unions today endorsed the second phase of their programmes after their first phase of protests ended on May 13.

The protest plans include organising a huge mass rally at Battisputali and a corner meeting at Baneshwor on May 29 and mobilising students to publicise the seven political parties’ struggle programmes on May 22, May 27 and June 3.

The students will organise joint protest programmes to press the government to achieve the goal targeted by them. The meeting also announced ‘strong’ protest programmes for the effective implementation of all the bilateral educational agreements reached between the government and the student bodies. They will also organise nationwide protest programmes on May 24 and May 29 against the February 1 Royal move.

The unions will also organise a seminar on ‘total democracy’, which will be represented by various professional organisations, on May 24 at TU, Kirtipur.

The meeting also demanded the Maoists immediately release Chakrabhyu Thapa, central member of ANNFSU (Unified) who was abducted and whose whereabouts are still unknown.

Meanwhile, the ANNFSU organised chakkajams in front of most of the Valley campuses this morning. They also organised protest rallies across the country today. They also organised torch rallies in major parts of the Valley in the evening.
