Students rally demands ‘full’ democracy

Kathmandu, May 29:

Student leaders representing various political parties stressed on full democracy and demanded the release of all the illegally detained activists during a protest rally organised here today.

The seven students’ union organised a protest rally from Battisputali which finally converted into a corner meet at Maitidevi Chowk. The leaders of the seven students’ unions addressed the corner meet.

Khimlal Bhattarai, the president of All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU), said that the movement would not stop unless full democracy was restored in the country.

Thakur Gaire, the ANNFSU general secretary, said that the government should stop its move to curb press freedom, stop violating students’ right to participate in political activities and the suppression of employees at the earliest.

Stressing that security personnel should be removed from campus premises, Gaire threatened that the government would be held responsible for the consequences.”

The more the government becomes aggressive, its consequences would be the same,” said Gaire.

Badri Pandey, the acting president of Nepal Students’ Union, stressed on the revival of the House of Representatives.

Prakash Pokhrel, the general secretary of ANNFSU (Unified), demanded a republican set up, which he said, was the only way to resolve the current stalemate.

Kalyan Kumar Gurung, the joint general secretary of Nepal Students’ Union affiliated to Nepali Congress (Democratic), said that the unconstitutional Royal Commission for Corruption Control must be dismantled as it has been set up to harass students and leaders who are fighting for democracy. Another student leader, Bikrant Subedi, too, stressed on full democracy during the programme.

Members of the Free Students’ Union, Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus, too, expressed solidarity and said that they were ready to fight against the government’s move to curb press freedom.
