Students shut Sanskrit varsity
Kathmandu, January 28:
Demanding the announcement of the date for Free Students Union (FSU) election, Nepal Students Union today padlocked the Basantapur-based contact office of Nepal Sanskrit University.
The students had padlocked the central office of the varsity at Beljhundi in Dang district on
January 23.
The contact office was being used by vice-chancellor Bidur Poudel, Registrar Bhagwat Sharma and Rector Kartikeya Jha.
The NSU used to conduct FSU election coinciding with the FSU polls of Tribhuvan University.
Though the TU has already announced the date for its FSU election, the NSU is yet to announce any.
The Sanskrit has 18 campuses where FSUs have been formed.
“We are ready to sit for talks with the NSU authorities on our other demands as soon as it declares the date for FSU polls,” said Prakash Tiwari, president of NSU central committee of Nepal Students Union.
Tiwari said the NSU had not talked to the student leaders regarding the election date.
“We had handed over a memorandum to VC Poudel on January 23,” he added.
The other demands put forth by the agitating students include: introduction of the provision of studying English in Veda Bidhyashrams throughout the country, enhancing quality of transcripts and migration certificates, free correction of erroneous hand-written certificates, publication of yearly calendar and introduction of computerised certificates.
Both VC Poudel and Rector Jha could not be contacted for comments despite several attempts.
