Summiteers to march in Copenhagen

KATHMANDU: As the historic Cabinet meet in Kalapatthar Plateau of the Mount Everest held on December 4, concludes, the government ministers along with the Everest summiteers are warming up for an hour-long march in the street of Copenhagen on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations climate change conference slated to kick off in Copenhagen next week.

The March slated for December 11 will last for an hour along the Copenhagen's Walking Street, carrying forward the message - Save the Himalayas - as proclaimed from the roof of the World and beyond. The march coincides with the International Mountain Day, with the mountain gears followed by the cultural sherpa dance.

To attend the summit, 57-member team headed by Minister for Forests and Soil Conservation, Deepak Bohara, is leaving Nepal for Copenhagen on Monday.

The event is funded by the World Bank, Nepal office, the Danish Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal Mountaineering Association and Nepal Association of Trekking Agents together with the Hotel Association of Nepal, Travel Agents' Association of Nepal, Union Finance, Buddha Air, Himalayan Bank, UNDP, DFID, WWF Nepal, and a host of other agencies.

During the march, Minister Bohara will be joined by Deputy prime Minister Sujata Koirala, Finance Minister Surendra Pandey, Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Sarat Singh Bhandari, Environment Minister Thakur Sharma and Minister for Federal Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs, Constituent Assembly and Culture Dr Minendra Rizal.

The 57-member Copenhagen-bound team includes 32 summiteers, including 19-times climber Appa Sherpa, Dawa Steven Sherpa, the two-time Everest summiteer Angrita Sherpa - the snow leopard, the oldest climbing record holder Min Bahadur Sherchan who climbed Everest at the age of 67, Phurba Tashi, who conquered the Everest for 16 times and the youngest female climber, Nimduma Sherpa, among others.

The team includes 12 women summiteers.

World renowned summiteers including Peter Habler - Austrian summiteers who climbed the Everest without oxygen - Byron Smiths, the Canadian Mt Everest summiteers, Mayor of Prague and Everest climber Pavel Bem will join the Summiteers' Summit.
