Supreme Court quashes writ against Cabinet expansion

KATHMANDU: Supreme Court of Nepal on Wednesday quashed the writ petition filed against the expansion of Cabinet by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Earlier on December 13, advocate Kanchan Krishna Neupane had filed a writ against the expansion of Cabinet beyond 25.  The apex Court had directed the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to forge a written response by January 12.

After studying the OPMCM's response,  a single bench of Chief Justice Kalyan Krishna Shrestha concluded that the Cabinet expansion was a political decision and quashed the writ.

In his response, the Prime Minister had argued that the Cabinet was expanded according to the ‘need of the hour’ and was not against the spirit of the new constitution.

He had maintained that it was not an issue of judicial review.
