KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 6
The government has established a working group, overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs, to conduct a feasibility study on marijuana cultivation in the country.
During a meeting convened on Monday at the Ministry of Finance, chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, a working group was formed.
This group is coordinated by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs and includes Joint Secretaries from various government bodies, such as the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministries of Finance, Industry, Law, Foreign Affairs, and a representative from Nepal Police. The Member-Secretary of this group is the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.
During the meeting, Finance Minister Mahat instructed the task force to deliver its report within one month. The task force has been assigned two main objectives: to research the potential medicinal uses of marijuana and to explore possibilities for industrialization. Additionally, the task force will investigate the feasibility of producing clothing from hemp stems, leaves, and fibers.
It is worth noting that the government's budget estimates for the current fiscal year had mentioned the need to study the possibility of marijuana cultivation.
