‘Teachers, students shouldn’t indulge in politics’

Prime Minister KP Oli today urged teachers and students not to indulge in political activities.

Addressing the 57th senate meeting of Tribhuvan University, PM Oli, who is also the chancellor of the university, said, “There was a time when students and university professors set the stage for political movements, but now the nation has already got a new constitution.

So, teachers and students should refrain from political activities in educational institutions.”

He said universities and educational institutions should purely focus on producing qualified human resources for the country. “Improved quality of education in educational institutions would help produce the much-needed human resources for the development of the country,” he added.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of the Vice Chancellor’s Office, which was damaged in the earthquakes last year. The TU senate meeting today passed policy and programmes and set a budget of Rs 18.25 billiion for the fiscal year 2016/2017. The meeting also amended some regulations.

Similarly, the meeting nominated Prof Tara Prasad Sapkota as member of TU Executive Council from among the deans of various faculties and Bishwonath Joshi as chairperson of TU Appellate Commission.

Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor of TU Giriraj Mani Pokharel said time-relevant education was the need of the hour. “TU should move ahead by managing existing challenges,” he said.

Prof Tirtha Khaniya briefed the senate on the future plans of the university. He also vowed to take steps to establish the university as a centre of academic excellence. Khaniya also announced free WiFi service on the university premises.

“We are going to maintain academic calendar,” he said, adding, “From now onwards, results of annual exams will be announced within three months.”
